The Camel Stitch is one of my favorite crochet stitch techniques. I have used this stitch in many of my patterns. Like the Ana Series, which is 7 patterns: Bottom Up and Top Down Beanie, Messy Bun Beanie, Bonnet, Ear Warmer, Infinity Scarf, and Fingerless Gloves.
The Camel Stitch (CS) is where you work a Half Double Crochet (HDC) in the Third Loop of the previous row. When working in the round, like hats or ear warmers, the third loop is found behind the top loops that you normally crochet in. This pushes the top loops to the front of your work like a braid.
When working in flat (back and forth) rows, like my Snow Beanie or Camel Stitch Fingerless Gloves patterns, you turn on each row. Turning makes the back of the half double crochet stitches face you from the previous row. So, the third loop will be facing you.
As you notice each technique looks different. The Camel Stitches in the round are tight together, but they have a nice stretch. I love the definition this technique gives the stitches. The Camel Stitches worked flat has space between the rows. They look the same on the front and the back, where as in the round is different on the back.
