Are you loving the Caron Cotton Cakes Yarn as much as I am??? I have already designed several patterns with this yarn. Like the Adult Tied Cover Up, the Child Tied Cover Up, and now this Carry All Drawstring Tote Crochet Pattern.

The Carry All Drawstring Tote can carry….well….it all! It is a nice and roomy crochet bag with a drawstring closure. Measuring 16″ wide by 13″ tall. Complete the look with a beautiful I-Cord string. Find the video and photo tutorial in the pattern notes.

So where can these beautiful Care Cotton Cakes be found? My local Michaels Store has them in stock right now. But they sell out fast and last year they weren’t available for a long time. I didn’t even know if they would have them back this year. They are made by Yarnspirations, but I did not see them on their website.

Do you have to use Caron Cotton Cakes for this pattern? No! There are many other great yarns out there that will work perfect! The Caron Cotton Cakes are Acrylic and Cotton blend. Any cotton yarn or cotton blend yarn that is a medium #4 weight would work perfect!

Carry All Drawstring Tote Crochet Bag Pattern by Crochet it Creations

Materials Needed

  • H 5.0mm (for Bag) and F 4.0mm (for I-Cord) Crochet Hook
  • Approx 500 yards of Caron Cotton Cakes yarn or any Medium Weight #4 yarn
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations (U.S. Terms)

Gauge

  • 4” square – 17 rows x 17 sc

Pattern Notes

  • Bag is worked from the bottom up
  • See post here from Planet June on how to make a Crochet I-Cord. I like how thick this is, versus just a plain chain for the drawstring
  • Finished tote measures approximately 16” wide x 13” tall
  • When joining in the round, pull your slip stitches tight. This will make your row joins less visible
  • Beginning chain DOES NOT count as a stitch

Photo shows bottom of bag with sc in the back bump of the chain then working on the opposite end (Round 1). This makes the beginning chain invisible.

Start the Crochet Bag Pattern

With H hook – Chain 41

Rnd 1: place 2sc in second ch from hook in the back bump of the chain, sc in each 38 ch across, place 2sc in last ch. Turn working on opposite side of chain. Place 2sc in first chain FLO. Sc in each 38 ch across, going through both loops on the opposite side of the back bump of the chain. Place 2sc in last ch. Join (84) See photo above.

Rnd 2: ch 1, *2sc in 2 stitches, sc in 38 st, 2sc in next 2 stitches* repeat from * to *. (92) join

Rnd 3: ch 1, *[sc in 1 st, 2sc in next] repeat again, sc in 38 st, [sc in 1 st, 2sc in next] repeat again.* repeat from * to *. Join (100)

Rnd 4: ch 1, *[sc in 2 stitches, 2sc in next] repeat again, sc in 38 st, [sc in 2 stitches, 2sc in next] repeat again.* repeat from * to *. Join (108)

Rnd 5: ch 1, *[sc in 3 stitches, 2sc in next] repeat again, sc in 38 st, [sc in 3 stitches, 2sc in next] repeat again.* repeat from * to *. Join (116)

Rnd 6: ch 1, *[sc in 4 stitches, 2sc in next] repeat again, sc in 38 st, [sc in 4 stitches, 2sc in next] repeat again.* repeat from * to *. Join (124)

Rnd 7:  ch 1, *[sc in 5 stitches, 2sc in next] repeat again, sc in 38 st, [sc in 5 stitches, 2sc in next] repeat again.* repeat from * to *. Join (132)

Rnd 8: ch 1, *[sc in 6 stitches, 2sc in next] repeat again, sc in 38 st, [sc in 6 stitches, 2sc in next] repeat again.* repeat from * to *. Join (140)

Rnd 9-20: ch 1, sc around. Join (140)

Rnd 21: ch 2, dc in same st, *ch 1, sk 1 st, dc* repeat from * to * around. Join to top of 1st dc. (140 dc & ch)

Rnd 22-33: sl st into next ch-1 sp, ch 2, dc in same ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sk dc, dc in next ch-1 sp* repeat around. Join. (140 dc & ch)

Rnd 34: ch 1, sc in each dc and ch-1 sp around. Join (140)

Rnd 35-38: ch 1, sc around. Join (140)

Rnd 39: ch 2, dc in same st, *ch 1, sk 1 st, dc* repeat from * to * around. Join. (140 dc & ch)

Rnd 40: ch 1, sc in each dc and ch-1 sp around. Join (140)

Rnd 41-42: ch 1, sc around. Join (140)

I-Cord Drawstring

With F Hook, create an I-Cord for the drawstring. See post and video here from Planet June to make one. Mine was 42” long. Weave in ends. Place I-Cord in the center of the front of the bag. Weave in and out of every other ch-1 space from round 39.

Toggle for Drawstring

With H Hook – Ch 10, join to create a ring

Rnd 1: ch 1, sc in each ch around. Join (10)

Rnd 2-5: ch 1, sc around. Join (10)

Finish off, leaving a long tail. Slide both I-Cord Drawstrings through the toggle. Attach needle to yarn tail and sew together the center of the toggle. Making sure you are not sewing any part of the I-Cord. The toggle should be snug enough to slide up and down with keeping the top closed.

Straps (make 2)

Leave long tail before slip knot for sewing. With H Hook – chain 9

Row 1: sc in each ch across in the back bump. (8) ch 1 and turn

Row 2-90: sc in each st across (8) ch 1 and turn

Finish off leaving a long tail to attach.

Position strap in the front on each side of the drawstring. Sew the bottom of the strap to row 34 of the bag. Sew up the sides, lining up the rows and across row 38, then back down the other side. Be sure not to attach any of the strap to row 39, the dc & ch 1 row. I placed 2 X in the center for extra security. Turn the bag over and line up the second strap. Sew in the same manner. Weave in ends.

Optional to fold the strap in half and whip stitch it together to give extra security. Count about 18 rows up from where you sewed the straps on, fold in half and begin sewing together.

  2. Hello Just a quick question. I have Lion brand Mandala It is a #3 and 100% Acrylic do you think it would work for this bag. I love this bag and love the color of yarn I got. Thanks

    1. I do not think that Mandala would be a good option, or any #3 weight yarn. I would also suggest cotton for durability. I hope this helps. Thanks for reaching out.
