How to Make a Double Pom Mainstream Beanie

double pom pom beanie

The Mainstream Beanie has been one of my favorite patterns since it released in 2019. It comes in 8 sizes from newborn to adult and works up quick. It has beautiful detail with basic stitches. But I bet you didn’t know it could be altered to a Double Pom Pom Beanie in any of those sizes.

I have been making these Mainstream Beanies for a local boutique and the owner requested double poms for the baby sizes. They are so adorable… see below! I thought it may be helpful if I showed you how I alter the pattern so you can make them for yourself!

If you need the Mainstream Beanie Pattern to print get it from Etsy HERE.

Double Pom Beanie Instructions

Work the Mainstream Beanie crochet pattern as usual in any of the 8 sizes. Complete the body and the brim of the beanie. When you close the top, here is where the change occurs…

Determine where you want the front of the beanie to be and lay it flat. Leave a long tail at the beginning to sew a button and Sl St to one of the rows at the top of the beanie.

Instead of SC2TOG in the end of each row like the original instructions state, do this – [SC2TOG in 2 rows, SC in next row] around, join.

Lay the beanie flat again and close the top across. To do this, Sl St through the front and the back stitch of the row just made. Sl St it closed all the way across. Fasten off leaving a long tail to sew the button.

Attach a 1″ button to the inside of the beanie on each end of the line just made. Right above where the pom poms are placed in photo below. Attach pom poms by elastic to each button. See video below for how to attach elastic pom poms to a button.

If you make your own pom poms, then sew directly on and no buttons are necessary. Or use pom poms with snaps and sew the snaps on the same place as the buttons.
