Make Your Own Faux Fur Pom Poms!

Faux fur is so popular right now especially on handmade hats and beanies. My pattern The Ana Beanie is perfect to go with faux fur Pom Pom. If you make hats you are probably noticing that the premade faux fur pom poms can be expensive. What if I told you that you can make them yourself for CHEAP!!

They are also very simple to make. All you need is some faux fur fabric. This comes in the fabric section of the craft stores and is sold by the yard. I bought mine at Walmart and only purchased a quarter of a yarn. I believe it was about $3. This will make, if I were to guess….about 20 pom poms. For only $3!!!!

Materials needed:

  • Faux fur fabric
  • Exacto knife or scissors
  • Needle
  • Upholstery nylon thread (you need the durable stuff)
  • Something to stuff it with
  • Pen or marker
  • Optional: button and crochet hat

Making the fur pom pom:

First you will need to lay the fur out faced down. You will want to draw a circle on the backing with a pen or marker. You can use something round to trace it, like a cup.

Then using an X-acto knife cut the circle out. You can use scissors but it gets messy with the fur. The x-acto knife makes for a clean cut. Then separate the circle from the rest of the fabric.

Using the nylon upholstery thread and needle sew around the outside of the circle.

Stuff the Pom Pom with something…anything.

Pull the thread tight to close the hole. You can weave it through a few times to assure the hole is closed. I prefer to attach a button at this point. But you do not have to.

Now you are ready to attach it to a hat or other item! I use the button to attach it to the hat. I usually do not make it removable, but you could.

I leave a hole a the top of my hats. Using a yarn needle, weave in and out of the hole stitches but not pulling tight yet. Insert the Pom Pom button through the top hole. Pull the yarn tight to close up the hole.

With the yarn tail I sew through the X of the button hole to secure it. Then weave through a few times and tie off.

And that’s it!! Simple and cheap faux fur pom pom for all your handmade items.

  1. When u wear the hat doesn’t the button hurt ur head? N how would u make the pom pom detachable?

    1. The hats I have made, you cannot feel the button because they’re not super tight. It could be detachable if you leave a small hole at the top of the hat and not close it all of the way. Then the button on the Pom Pom can go through. Or I’ve seen where people are attaching snaps to them.

  2. What size diameter circle are you using?

    1. I recommend 4-6” depending on how big you want them.

  3. Do you have a scarf pattern to go with the Ana beanie?
