Football Ear Warmer Crochet Pattern

These cute ear warmers are perfect for those cool, fall football games! The back is secured with an elastic hair band to stretch and get a perfect fit without worrying about the yarn stretching out. It can be made with or with out the flower. These were made for my girls ages 5 and 7. They measured 9.5″ across, so giving 19″ circumference without stretching. I was able to try it on and with the elastic band in the back it stretched to a perfect fit for myself. If you would like to make for an adult you could add 2-3 rows to the middle. I usually make my adult hats and ear warmers 20″ diameter.

If you get confused with adding the band please let me know. I hope to add more pictures soon.

Holding hair band in hand, sl st using brown into the band. (without chaining 1) sc 5 across band. ch 1 and turn

Row 1: hdc across (5) ch 1 and turn

Row 2:  hdc in first 2 stitches, 3hdc in next, hdc in last 2 stitches (7) ch 1 and turn

Row 3: hdc across (7)  ch 1 and turn

Row 7-11: hdc across (11) attach white at last hdc ch 1 and turn

*when changing colors with hdc yarn over with brown insert hook into st, yarn over with brown and pull up a loop. You will have 3 loops on the hook. Drop the brown and yarn over with the white. Making sure you are leaving a long enough tail to weave in (about 3 inches). When I turn and do the next row I simply crochet over the brown and the white tail to hide it. Please message me if you have questions about this.

Row 12: using white hdc across (11) attach brown again in last hdc ch 1 and turn

Row 13- 23:  using brown hdc across (11) attach white again in last hdc ch 1 and turn

Row 30: hdc in first 4 st, decrease hdc over next 3 st, hdc in last 4 st. (9) ch 1 and turn

*To decrease over 3 stitches you yarn over and insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through st (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and insert hook in next st, yarn over and pull through st (4 loops on hook). Yarn over again and insert hook in 3rd st, yarn over and pull through st (5 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through all loops.

Row 31: hdc across (9) ch 1 and turn

Row 32: hdc in first 3 st, decrease hdc over next 3 st, hdc in last 3 st (7). ch 1 and turn

Row 33: hdc across (7) ch 1 and turn

Attaching to other side of elastic band and adding border to ear warmer

sc in each stitch of hdc and elastic band. What I did was simply holding the band up to the back side of the hdc row and going through both. (5 sc)

sc on one side of the elastic band by crocheting 4 sc. Crochet 4 more sc holding both side of the elastic band together. Crochet 4 more sc on other side of the band as pictured.

Sc across the side of entire ear warmer. I insert 1 sc at the end of 1 row, the space out 2 sc in the next row (when I’m adding edging to hdc rows) and repeat that across. When you get around the one side of the ear warmer, sl st to first sc of side elastic band. Finish off.

Sl st to other side of ear warmer on elastic band. (without chaining 1) sc 4 in elastic band. Crochet 4 more sc going all the way through both sides of the elastic and sc that you first created. I inserted my hook into the “hole” of the opposite sc. (Look closely at the pic above). sc 4 more sc on the other side.

Sc across the other side of the entire ear warmer. On the other side sl st to first sc and finish off. Weave in all of the loose ends.

Using white sew on the laces of the football. You could do this by attaching yarn and slip stitching across, sew using straight lines, or hand sew on stitches that look like slip stitches like I did. Here is a video (not mine) to show you how to do the chain stitch embroidery, click here. I left 2 rows on each side open, then did the chain sewing across 7 rows. My short laces were 4-5 chains long and I made 4 of them evenly spacing out on the long stitch.

Flower

Using G hook, make magic ring.

Ch 1 and sc 10 times in ring. Pull tight to close center. Sl st to first sc.

Top Pedals:

Ch 3, skip a st and sl st in next sc. do this around and sl st to 1st sl st. (5 loops)

ch 1 sc in first ch-3 space, ch 1, 4 tr, ch 1, sc (this completes 1 pedal). Repeat in next 4 pedals. sc, ch 1, 4 tr, ch 1, sc. sl st to first sc. finish off.

Back Pedals:

sl st to any sc between the other pedals on the back side. ch 4 sl st in next sc between pedals. Repeat around ending with sl st in 1st sl st. (5 loops)

Ch 1 sc in ch-4 loop, ch 1, tr 5 times, ch 1, sc. Repeat in each ch-4 loop by sc, ch 1, 4 tr, ch 1, sc. Finish by sl st to first sc. finish off and sew on to ear warmer.
