Learn How to Make the Foundation Half Double Crochet Stitch

Foundation Rows are an AHHHMAZING crochet technique to learn! It is where you crochet the beginning chain AND the first row of stitches TOGETHER! You can use this with any crochet stitch.

For this post and video, you will learn how to crochet the Foundation Half Double Crochet Stitch. You will use this technique for patterns that are worked flat, like scarves, clothing, blankets, etc. Anything where you would usually chain to a certain number then go back and crochet across the chain.

To start the row, chain 2 (does not count as a stitch). Yarn over, place hook in to the first chain. Pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through the first loop (this creates the chain). Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on the hook (this creates the Half Double Crochet).

For the next stitch – Yarn over, insert hook in to the area that created the chain from the first stitch going through both loops. Pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through the first loop (creating a chain). Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on the hook (creating the HDC).

Repeat this technique until reaching desired amount of Half Double Crochet (HDC) Stitches.

You may notice how stretchy the first row is. Typically when you chain, then go back and work the first row, the chain does not stretch. Using a Foundation Row it makes your work more even.
