Learn how to crochet the half double crochet stitch with this beginner friendly video.
If I had to choose a favorite crochet stitch, it would definitely be the half double crochet stitch. It is the perfect size for any project. It works up quick, but doesn’t leave a lot of holes.
I use the half double crochet for many patterns, especially hats. The single crochet is a little too tight for hats, but the double crochet can leave gaps. So, the half double crochet is PERFECT!
The video goes over how to make a slip knot, chain, and half double crochet (HDC) stitch. All you need is some yarn and a crochet hook. See the yarn label for suggested hook to use.
The steps for making a half double crochet are yarn over. Insert hook into stitch (or chain). Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook.
See the half double crochet stitch in action on the Basic Hat pattern. It comes in 8 sizes, perfect for anyone in your family. The pattern uses increase, which is where you place 2 half double crochet (HDC) in the same stitch together.
If you are interested in the hook I am using in the video, it is Clover Amour in I 5.5mm. I love my Clover Amour hooks and can be purchased here…
