I’ve been working on a plant hanger crochet pattern that has a long tassel hanging from the bottom. Well, I realized that I didn’t have a post to show everyone how to make a tassel. I mean, I have a post for just about everything else….lol
Tassels are used in different crochet projects like on blanket corners, clothing, hats, and plant hangers! They are simple to make, just like making fringe. I even have a little trick that I use and I’ll show ya!
Materials Needed to Make Yarn Tassel
- Yarn
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Once upon a time when I was a newbie crafter and I wanted strips of yarn the same length, I would get the ruler out. I would cut eat strip to the measurement needed.
Welllll thankfully I have learned from that and NEVER use a ruler to get a lot of strips of yarn! I use a credit card, a book, a notebook, whatever I have available that is the length I want.
So, to make a tassel first determine how long you want it. Since I was making a plant hanger, I wanted a long tassel to hang from the bottom. I used a notebook that was standard paper size, about 11″ long. Use whatever you have handy to get the size you want.
Cut a strip of yarn about 12″ or more and place to the side.
Wrap the yarn around the item. I didn’t want a full tassel, so I wrapped it around about 25 times. Wrap more or less depending on how full you would like.
Before cutting the yarn, take the 12″ strip of yarn and tie it around the opposite end of where you started.
I prefer to loop my knots around twice when I tie knots so that they don’t come loose.
Cut the yarn on the opposite side that you tied the know and the same side that you started wrapping on.
Cut another strip of yarn about 12″ and tie that around about an inch or so from the top knot.
I have seen where some will place a larger bead in the inside before the top know to create a bubble. After you tie the knot, wrap the yarn around several times. Take a needle and weave each end of yarn through the center.
Cut the ends even across.
And you have a tassel! Attach by sewing onto whatever you need it on
