How to Make Ponytail Team Bows

How to Make Sports Team Ponytail Bows

My daughter plays softball and every year I’m asked to make team ponytail bows. I take on the challenge with no problem, as I love to be crafty. Plus, it’s so cute to see the whole team out there on the field with matching bows!

I purchased all the supplies used at my local Walmart Store’s craft section. Which, if you follow my posts, I purchase most of my craft supplies at Walmart. Get my groceries, makeup, yarn, and other craft supplies all in the same location. Convenience is key in a busy life!

I made 14 ponytail bows using 1 inch ribbon. I used 1 mega roll of white, 2 rolls of black & white chevron, and 2 rolls of neon green, using 1 strand of each color (so 3 strands total) for each bow. Plus a roll of 1/2″ white ribbon for the center.

Bows will hang about 10″ down from the center of the hair band. You can make longer for older kids, or shorter for younger kids. I made these ponytail bows for 9-10 year olds.

Materials Needed:

  • Elastic Hair Bands
  • Scissors
  • Thread (I usually use nylon because it doesn’t break when pulling)
  • 2-4 different colors of 1″ ribbon (I used 3) + 1 roll of 1/2″ ribbon for the center
  • Sewing Needle
  • Narrow spool of ribbon about 1/2″ wide
  • Measuring Tape
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Hot Glue Sticks
  • Fray Check, or clear glue for sealing the ends of ribbon.

  1. Cut all strands of ribbon at least 20″ long. I used 3 strands of ribbon for each bow, but you can use more or less.

2. Pull out the strands of ribbon being used for 1 bow. Find the center of the ribbon by folding in half.

3. Using needle and thread, weave in and out of each strand. If you want a fuller bow, do not stack strands on top of each other. Lay them all out side by side like photo above and sew in and out.

4. Pull thread together tight to cinch the center. Sew back through the center a few times.

5. Wrap the thread around the center a few times. Tie off and cut thread.

6. Cut strands of narrow ribbon in about 1.5″ strips. Using hot glue gun glue ribbon on to elastic hair band. Take the narrow strands of ribbon and hot glue around the center and hair band.

7. Fold the ribbon ends in half and cut at an angle. Use fray check (or clear glue) to seal the ends from fraying.
