Learn How to Make a Double Crochet Stitch

Learn how to crochet the double crochet stitch

Learn how to crochet the double crochet stitch with this beginner friendly guide and video.

As you may have seen, I have been working on some new videos of how to crochet basic stitches. These videos are for instructional purposes only and are not working a specific pattern. So, they are perfect to watch and practice with.

All you need is some yarn and a crochet hook to get started. If you are unsure which size crochet hook to use, check out the yarn label. There is a suggested hook size listed on every yarn label.

Check out my post on the Top 10 Crochet Tips that Every Crocheter Should Know.

The video goes over how to make a slip knot, chain, and double crochet stitches. The steps to make a Double Crochet stitch are…. insert hook in to stitch (or chain), yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops on hook.

Take time to practice how to hold the yarn and the hook. The hook should be in your dominant hand. You non-dominant hand controls the tension of the yarn. If your tension is too tight, the stitches will be tight. If your tension is loose, the stitch will be loose. This takes lots of time and practice to get the hang of…. but hang in there and keep going.

If you are interested in the hook I am using in the video, it is Clover Amour in I 5.5mm. I love my Clover Amour hooks and can be purchased here…

Double crochet stitches are perfect for blankets and scarves. I don’t typically use them in my hat patterns, because they are long stitches. They will cause gaps. Check out the Fringe Infinity Scarf if you are looking for a pattern to try out the Double Crochet (DC) stitch on. It uses 1 skein of Caron Big Cakes yarn.
