Scrunchies Crochet Pattern in 3 Different Styles

Scrunchies Crochet Pattern using Velvet Yarn

Scrunchies are back and my kids are loving them! I grew up in the 90’s and scrunchies were a staple in my style. My grandma and I even used to crochet them too!

About the Yarn

I chose to use Bernat Baby Velvet yarn for my scrunchies. It is a Medium Weight #4, unlike the regular Bernat Velvet which is a Bulky #5. I like the Baby Velvet because it keeps the scrunchies from being too bulky.

1 skein of Bernat Baby Velvet will make a ton of scrunchies! The skein I bought from Joann’s has 492 yards and the one I bought from Michael’s has xxx.

Different Styles

Sewn scrunchies typically are made in a tubular shape then added to an elastic band. This technique doesn’t work up so well for crocheted ones.

The most common way I have seen crocheted scrunchies made is to crochet stitches around an elastic hair band. I have 2 variations for this technique. One where you crochet a row of single crochets first, then work 3 double crochets in each stitch to get the ripple effect.

The next option was to crochet treble crochet stitches around the elastic hair band. With this way, you have to squeeze all of those stitches on there to get it to ripple.

When my grandma and I made scrunchies we made them with a series of loops. Back then we used cotton thread and even added beads to them. This technique worked up nicely in the Barnet Baby Velvet and made the scrunchies fuller.

Pattern Notes

  • Velvet yarn is preferred for scrunches, as it will not pull the hair. Bernat has a medium and a bulky weight velvet. Note that for this pattern we are using the medium #4 weight.
  • Scrunchies are made over plain elastic hair bands.
  • Scrunchies come in 3 different options. Option 1 is a tight SC around the band. Option 2 is treble crochets. Option 3 is made of loops and is much fuller.
  • You will need more stitches on the band so when they stretch they will still be full. Squeeze all of the stitches on.
