When I was first creating this Beginners Basket Crochet Pattern, I had in mind an Easter Basket. That’s what I intended on calling the pattern. Although I definitely plan on using this pattern as Easter baskets for my kids, it is so much more than that! I can think of so many different things this basket would be useful for, like holding more yarn! ha!
The Beginners Basket Crochet Pattern is truly for beginners. If you know how to make a single crochet stitch and somewhat understand a pattern, this is perfect for you! I have been asked to make some patterns for beginners and videos to go with it. With the craziness of life, I am trying my best to do that!
This basket uses Bernat Blanket yarn. This yarn is PERFECT for baskets because it’s thickness has good hold! This yarn normally calls for an L 8.0mm crochet hook. This pattern uses a K 6.5mm crochet hook to make the stitches tighter. Which will make a more sturdy basket…..perfect! The basket stands up nicely on its own. And its super soft to work with! This yarn is made of polyester, not acrylic like many yarns.
Bernat Blanket Stripes was used in the photos. This was my first time working with this yarn and I was pretty surprised by the abrupt color changes. It doesn’t even transition with color dyes, it is 2 different color strands intertwined together. I’m used to working with Caron Cakes and Lion Brand Mandala which typically has some type of smoother transitions. In the future, I will probably just go with Bernat Blanket solids or the variegated colors. Just my own personal opinion.
Materials Needed
- Bernat Blanket #6 Super Bulky Yarn – about 110 yards for 1 basket. So 1 10.5oz skein makes 2 baskets….yay!
- K 6.5mm crochet hook
- wide eye needle for weaving in ends
- scissors
Stitches Used
- sc – single crochet
- join – slip stitch to first stitch
Pattern Notes
- It is worked in round rows with joining to each row. Pull slip stitch tight on join to make less visible, but BE CAREFUL because this yarn with break when pulling too hard!
- Finished basket measures approximately 10″W x 5″H
- Gauge is not necessary, because it’s a basket and you can make it however small or big you like š

I am very new to crochet and am wondering if you can identify what happened to my pattern. Iāve followed it carefully twice and my first 5 rounds created a very curly circle. I tried a second time and did it looser and it still curled. Any thoughts?
Jill are you using the yarn and hook size recommended?
I had the same problem with the curling for the bottom, so I donāt know
