Who doesn’t love a beautiful textured crochet beanie that looks knitted?? I’m obsessed with textures and knit-looking stitches! The are so pretty to look at and keeps you warm while looking stylish. The Braided Cable Beanie is the perfect crochet version of a cable knit hat.
The Braided Cable Beanie is constructed from the brim up using front post and back post stitches. It is completed with an over-sized faux fur pom pom. Find out here how to make your own fur pom pom for CHEAP. Photos are made with I Love This Yarn! by Hobby Lobby. Other medium weight yarn should work, just be sure to check gauge.
Link below materials needed is for faux fur pom poms on Amazon if you are unable to make your own. I have NOT personally tried these. I make my own. They are sold in the US and had good reviews. There are many others sold on Amazon and other stores.
The pom poms I made are from faux fur sold at Walmart. I buy 1/4 of a yard which was less than $5. This makes MANY pom poms! I wanted these a little larger and cut them in 6″ circles instead of 4″ that I normally do. See post here for step-by-step instructions. Optional to apply a button to the bottom or sew straight on.
I greatly appreciate every single view, comment, like, purchase, social media connect, etc!
Be sure to read the Pattern Notes and Stitches Used. Also read the pattern carefully if you have never worked with cables before, or check out the video tutorial. They can be difficult.

Hi! I was wondering if you could possibly do a video tutorial of this hat pattern? I don’t quite understand patterns but I am more of a visual learner. Love this pattern and how it has the knitted look. Would love to learn how to do this hat ?
I do not have a video tutorial ☹️ I can try to do one. However I usually cannot do audio bc with kids and pets my house is noisy! I’ll see what I can do though ☺️
That would be amazing if you had time to do the whole hat on YouTube. With cables I really need visual as well.
Definitely on my to do list!
What is the stitch multiple?
It’s a 20 stitch repeat
Im having a horrible time with row two, where you say to FPDC in the last 3 DC. I’ve redone this row so many times and just can’t get it. Please help!
You are masking an X in the middle of those 12 post stitches. Want to send me photos to my email and I’ll walk you through it? Jessica@crochetitcreations.com
Thank you for sharing your pattern! Love the knit look. Very good pictures, cables can be intimidating but I think once you get started its pretty straight forward. Under “Brim” instructions, Row 2 is blocked (by a larger ad), so I’m just going to blo the rows. Thanks again! Saved/Favorite on Ravelry!
Of course, after I posted comment, pattern came up larger print and Brim instructions are visible now. Sorry about that!
That’s ok! Those ads can get in the way! Goodluck! Let me know if you have questions
This hat works up beautifully! Thank you so much for making this a free pattern, I was able to make up the hat in just a few hours yesterday. Pattern would probably be tricky for someone who hasn’t done cables before, but just watch a youtube vid on how to work them and should make much more sense. Again, thank you for taking the time to write this pattern up and making it available for free.
You are welcome!! Thanks for the feedbakc
I would like to purchase a pdf of this pattern but don’t find anyplace on Ravelry to do that. There’s no “buy it” that I can find. Thank you.
Hello! There is a link at the top and bottom of the post. Incase there’s an error. Here’s the link https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/braided-cable-beanie-2
Thank you for your interest and purchase. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Babygirl had the flu for a couple days and so I made this pattern… It was absolutely adorable on her (big since she’s two, but a rolled hem looks presh on her lol) and I HAD to make one for myself to match. So easy to follow, builds fast, with a beautiful texture in the end. Thanks so much! New favorite ?
Thanks for the feedback! I had the flu last week and I feel for your little one. That stuff is no joke! I would love to see your photos tag me on IG or FB! ♥️
I love this hat! Thanks so much for the pattern. I am working up a gauge swatch using the brim sst and I’m having a time keeping the ends even. Is the first sst worked in the very first stitch and in which stitch do I work the final stitch? Thank you for your time! I am looking forward to making the hat!!!!
You are welcome! Yes the first slst is in the first st and each across. It kind of works better if instead of flipping it to turn, just angle it to work back up the row. If that doesn’t make since, you can always do sc BLO brim. Just account for the extra stretching of it. I usually do 16” of sc BLO for adult size. Also, the brim is not included in the gauge. I hope that helps!
Thank you that makes sense!
Thankyou for sharingI was looking for some help however on row2 and have80 but coming up with 1more an additional row.leaving me just before the fptc. This is my second attempt and I’ll be frogging it to try again maybe I’m missing something but I’m 2fpdc,3bpdc,Skip3, bptc3behind the fist3, And finally, Bpdc in last 3,Then repeat 3 more times
Hello! I’m not following your question. I would be happy to help.
Row 3 notes say to alternate between front and back but the pattern says for row 3 to 12 fpdc? I saw your video for the pillow cover but still uncertain if I’m over thinking or miss understanding. Tia
Oh good catch! The pattern notes was meant to say rows 2 & 4. It amazes me that I read over these patterns and so does my tester 1000x and there’s still errors.
Follow the pattern directions. If you have any more questions let me know. Thanks!
Pretty! This was a really wonderfᥙl article. Thank you for providing this information.
Could not see what you were doing with your hands and hook in the cable video. Your camera was pointed too low. The commentary sounded as though you were dealing with the issue I was having if only I could see it.
Hello Milo! Maybe I can help where your stuck at? Want to shoot me a message and maybe a photo? Thanks! -Jessica
I’m actually having trouble on row 3. The 12 FPDC (making sure to go in order R-L) I can’t tell the order of the stitches for the middle 6 that are with the braided part.
It is hard and a little confusing. Try your best to smooth out the stitches.
Hello! I am having the same issue on row 3. Should I do the stitches that appear to be behind the others or the ones that are in front first in the 12 FPDC? Love the pattern and I really want to make this hat!!
On round 3, you are trying to straighten out those crossed stitches. Make sure you go in order. It helps to look at the top loops that you would Crochet in normally to see which post stitches are next.
I am in love with this look! Any tips for making it more of a child size? Go down a hook size or two? Skip one set of braids? Thank you for all of your beautiful patters, helpful links and responses!
Hi Robyn!! What size child would you be making for? My girls are 6 & 8 and can wear this size. It has good stretch. If making for smaller. I would suggest to go down a hook size and maybe eliminate a dc before and after the braid sequence (where there are 3 BPDC) I would not eliminate a braid sequence. Let me know what you decide and if you need further guidance!
Thank you for the reply!!! I never got notified that you had responded and I only once I was rereading the comments!
I have a 3 year old with a big head and I tend to crochet tighter and smaller than the listed gauge. So if you’re girls wear this, I should be able to adjust it for my daughter.
I’m going to make one for me first to see how the pattern works up and then figure out how to adjust it.
Thank you!!
No worries! You are so welcome! Let me know how it turns out ☺️
Hi Robyn!! What size child would you be making for? My girls are 6 & 8 and can wear this size. It has good stretch. If making for smaller. I would suggest to go down a hook size and maybe eliminate a dc before and after the braid sequence. This will cut back on 8 stitches. I hope this helps!!
Hi, love your pattern. I want to do it with a particular yarn but only have one skein. What is the amount of yardage used for this hat
Hello! It uses about 250 yards. I cannot believe I don’t have that on here ?
Fantastic pattern. Thank-you so much.
You are so welcome!!
I was so confused after row 16. At the end, it says (44) stitches and I had (48). I was wondering where I messed up. I went back through my rows to count my stitches again, which took forever, and I realized I hadn’t made a mistake. I was supposed to have (48) stitches. Row 16 has 2 decreases repeating the pattern more 3 more times would make 8 decreases for row 16, which in turn would be (56) – 8 = (48), (56) from row 15. So I continued the pattern. On row 18, I ended up with (20) stitches not (28). So, I was wondering what I did wrong again, but I quickly realized row 18 has 3 decreases repeating the pattern 3 more times would make 12 decreases for row 18, which would be (32) – 12 = (20), (32) from row 17. So row 19 would be (10) stitches, not (14) because of the dc2tg for row 18 (20) – 10 = (10) and row 20 would be (5), not (7), because dc2tg row 19 (10) – 5 = (5).
*If you just follow the pattern as intended and not pay attention to how many stitches you need at the end of your rows (unlike me,) you will end up with a perfect, beautiful creation.
Just wanted to point out the fact of wrong number display on the pattern. Other than that I loved this pattern! It was my first attempt at a cable knit-inspired hat and I can’t wait to post a pic!
Lacey,
Thank you so much for your thorough message! I reviewed the pattern and you are correct. This pattern was tested by 2 other testers and has been recreated 1000x. You are the first one to bring the math error to my attention. Thank you so much. I have corrected this pattern. I can’t wait to see your finished photo.
Jessica
I’m a stitch counter top, lol. Thanks for catching this or is be ripping it all out.
Hello! I’d love to make this pattern and was wondering what colors of impeccable yarn you used in your pictures? Thanks!
Burgundy and Deep Forrest ♥️
I’ve made your Ana Beanie and love it. I haven’t made this one yet but it’s on my list of to do’s. Thank you so much for making it available as a free pattern!!
You are so welcome!!
Sorry if this was already asked but is there an approx amount of yarn? I have this hand dyed yarn I want to use and it’s ombre so I’d like to be able to use just one skein. Any idea????
Hello! It is about 250 yards.
Hi I am struggling with the rib.. is it slip stitch in back loop of every stitch? i find I can get the hook in the slip stitch on the nect row? The hat looks ace…
There is a video at the bottom of the pattern of how to do the slip stitch brim
Make sure youryo leaving the slip stitches losel. It helps to get into them in the next round. On the hat I did, I think I did front post and sc instead.

This is my favorite hat I’ve ever made! Already made 2 for myself now I’m working on a 3rd as a Christmas gift. This pattern is very easy to follow. Thank you!
Awesome!! You are so welcome
Thank you for the great pattern!
Is your gauge made with sc stitches or dc stitches?
You are most welcome! It is with double crochet stitches.
Thank you! I have been crocheting & designing for over 35 years. I fell in love with the look of your hat but am not the girlie pompom type. I wasn’t previously a fan of the brim start hats but your beautifully written pattern convinced me on both counts. I whipped this little sweetheart out this morning & plan to make a few as gifts & one for myself (which rarely happens). I appreciate you sharing your talent. This is a definite favorite pattern & absolutely adorable for any age!
Thank you so much for sharing your feedback Marti! Glad you like it ☺️
On row 3 . Do we have to follow as it is on 12 fpdc as it is or do we follow the pattern on-row 2. Help I have frogged 3 times.
Hello! You would make 12 FPDC across. This will straighten out the crossed cable stitches from the row prior. I hope that helps ☺️
80 stitches would be too large for me. What is the repeat on the pattern so I can reduce it appropriately? Thanks, a very nice pattern.
Thank you. The stitch pattern is 20 stitches. You would need to adjust your hook size.
I am having problems with Row 2. After working the treble stitches – what does it mean when working forward to fpdc in the LAST(?) 3 dc?
Hello! The Braided Cable is 12 stitches wide. On row 2 you are creating an X in the center of those 12 stitches. After you create the X you fpdc in those last 3 stitches.
Hi. I feeling like I am loosing my mind. In row 2, I keep getting to 17 stitches, but I know it should be 20. Dc2, bpdc3, fpdc3, skip 3, fptc3, go back to the 3 skipped with fptc3, and bpdc3. That is only 17. Help please!
You are skipping over one of the instructions. It looks like the last set of Front posts after the TC and before the BP. 2FPDC, 3BPDC, 3FPDC, 3FPTC, 3FPTC, 3FPDC, 3BPDC.
My question is answered. I had wondered how to alter for a 10 year old of it this would fit. I think I found the answer in the comments. thank you for sharing this beautiful pattern
Hi Ruth! I bet your 10 year old would fit fine in the adult size. My daughter was 8 last year and she wore it fine. You could always go down a hook size. I do not recommend to alter the pattern stitches. It is on a 20 stitch repeat.
Hi, I’m having a hard time with row5: fpdc in next 12 st. I have read other posts regarding this but I’m still not getting the order. I love this hat so whatever you could do to help me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Hi Jackie! Sorry for the delayed response. Want to send me a pic on Facebook message or email me at jessica@crochetitcreations.com
Hi. Just finished the ss brim. How do I know where to put each of the 80 dc? I don’t have 80 rows in the brim. Thanks.
Hello! Just place the DC anywhere evenly around. 1 tip is to use stitch markers and mark every 1/4 of the brim. Then place 20 DC between each stitch marker.
Could you please clarify row 2. Ch 2, * FPDC in1st 2 DC,3BPDC, 3FPDC, skip 3DC, 3FPTR in next 3DC,3 FPTR in skipped 3 stitches, skip 3DC, 3 FPTR in skipped DC going behind FPTR,3 FPDC in next 3 DC, 3 BPDC in next 3 DC* repeat 3 more times. Do you repeat between the **’s or does repeat begin with the 3 BPDC?
Repeat between the * 3 more times.
Hi! I tried to skip the gauge (bad me!) so now I am working on my gauge swatch because when I jumped into the pattern a size 5.5 rendered a hat so big that is was over 13” wide. I am now trying to do 16 stitches and 9 rows and with a 3.0 hook, it’s measuring out to be 4”x4”.
Now, I’m not a pro and I really don’t crochet much but any advice on what I can do? I am using the correct yarn for the pattern (double checked that with a friend who crochets daily).
Please Help 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I should say, my real question is “is it ok that I am using a 3.0 hook? I don’t want to do my brim and end up with lots of space between stitches once I move to row 1 on the hat. 😐
Some medium weight yarn can vary, being more dense than others. What brand of yarn are you using? A 3mm hook is really small but you make crochet loose. If it met gauge then you can try it out.
I am having trouble with the gauge. I started crocheting this pattern with number 4 weight yarn and a I hook.. It came out huge I tried to convert it into a sweater for my frenchie but it was still too big… Have you updated this pattern and all to use different size yarn or a book please let me know it’s a beautiful pattern just big..
Did you test out a gauge swatch prior to making?
Hello, For a 1 year with a big head, what size hook would you recommend? Thank you.
I have been searching for a hat pattern and came across yours, it’s so beautiful! So I am going to make this for 2 and almost 4 year old. These are a gift and all I have to go off of is their head circumference, which is 19” for both. Brother has a big head:) any suggestions for sizing it down in width and height?
You can go down to a H or G hook.
Love this pattern! Made it for my sister (who has somewhat of a large head 😀 ) and because of the stretchiness in the brim and the way cables can stretch it fit her fantastically! The pattern does make something of a long/tall hat, and it does look a little awkward without a pom pom at the end. I think the pom pom distracts from the length, and really adds that finishing touch!
For some reason my “braids” are ending up as “S”. I am not sure what I am doing wrong 🙁 Please help?
Did you check out the YouTube Video? Make sure you are going in front and behind when the pattern states.
Could this be made with bulky yarn?
I would not recommend it, as it would come out too large.
Could this be made with bulky yarn?
I wouldn’t recommend it

Love this pattern and have made several in different yarns, hook sizes, and colors! Can I make this a slouch beanie by repeating rows 2-5 four instead of only three times? How would that look?
It sure can. I have seen some do that. It may be a bit stiff though.
On Row 16, where does the opening bracket go – where is the repeat? I bought the PDF and it’s missing on that page. I don’t see it on the website either.
It goes in front of the sk 2 sts. Thanks for pointing that typo out!
I’ve been asked to make a kelly green Irish looking baby blanket. I looked at a lot of cable patterns and this is the prettiest cable I’ve seen. So I’m going to adapt your pattern to a blanket. Wish me luck.
[…] And the second is this braided cable beanie pattern: https://www.crochetitcreations.com/so-admin/braided-cable-beanie/ […]
This is the most wonderful pattern for a hat. I got a very pretty Mayflower New Sky yarn on my birthday this year and your pattern is the prettiest one I’ve seen online. Also it’s easy to follow, especially with the video instructions (I was a bit confused about the FPTRs in the row 2, my bad for diving in the deep end instead of trying something easy first). Your pattern looks amazing even with a fuzzy yarn like New Sky. I’m so happy to find your website!
Just curious how to make this in smaller sizes. I made one for my self a year ago and my boyfriends kids love it. So I’d like to make us all matching hats for family pictures. I’m not a master crocheter by any means and I usually fumble through patterns by trial and error so any advice would be helpful!
A smaller crochet hook could get you a smaller size.
