Heart to Heart Beanie Crochet Pattern

Prefer a PDF version to print? Click Here —>

The Heart to Heart Beanie is a cute hat with detailed hearts. It is worked from the brim up using single crochet rows. The hearts are constructed from post stitches. Complete the beanie with a pom pom on top.

Hearts can be made in the same color as the hat, or change colors for the post stitches to add detail and make the hears stand out. The pattern is make for a child age 6-10. It measures 19″W x 8″L. To make the hat larger or smaller, adjust the stitch count. Each heart is 9 stitches wide. Adding 9 stitches will be large enough for an adult. Subtracting 9 stitches will be small enough for a small child.

The pattern uses an I 5.5mm hook for the brim. It switches to a J 6.0mm hook for the hat due to the tightness of the single crochet stitches.

Make a pom pom by hand using these step-by-step instructions here. Or Clover pom pom maker in size large are my favorite. They are super easy to use.

Materials Needed

  • I 5.5mm and J 6.0mm Crochet Hooks
  • Medium weight #4 yarn – approximately 150 yards for child size
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Tape measure

Stitches Used

  • Sc – single crochet
  • Join  – slip stitch to first st
  • Fpdc – front post double crochet, making the dc around the front of the stitch instead of in the top loops
  • BLO – back loop only
  • Dec – decrease (for dec sc in this pattern – insert hook in st, yarn over and pull up a loop. Insert hook in next st, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook)

Gauge

  • 4” x 4” square = 15 rows x 15 stitches

Pattern Notes

  • Fp around a sc is not easy, just do the best you can to get around the stitch
  • You are skipping stitches then sc in the stitch next to the one that was skipped to get the posts to be at an angle. The stitch count will be the same each row.
  • Hearts are 9 stitches wide. If you would like to make smaller or larger, add or subtract 9 stitches
  • Tip for doing 1st row of the hat. Divide number of stitch needed by 4. (72 / 4 = 18). Fold the brim in half, place stitch markers on each side. Fold in half the other way and place stitch markers. Now you have stitch markers every ¼ of the hat. Crochet 18 sc in 1/4 of the hat. Now you have 72 stitches!
  • Tip for decreasing rows. To make the decrease stitches less noticeable, space them out where they’re not on top of each other. Ex: 9 st, then dec. next row do 4 st, dec, then 8 st. That way the decrease is in the middle on the next row.

  1. Do you have instructions for adult size?

    1. I do not. But the hearts are 9 st wide. You can add 9 st and add 1-2” for the band. Using a K hook for the hat may be a good idea.
