My love for crochet started when I was a child, but grew as an adult when I started making crochet hats. I used to always “write” letters on my hats, just like I would if cross stitching. See, back then I did not know how to graph crochet. So, cross stitching made more sense to me.

Cross stitching over crochet stitches work best when you crochet single crochet stitches. Single crochet stitches are almost square. You would use 4 corners of each stitch like you would when working a cross stitch pattern.

You find many cross stitch graphs on the internet, or make your own. One way to make your own graph to cross stitch is with graph paper. Each square would equal 1 SC. You would fill in how you want your letters or design to look.

Another way to make your own cross stitch graphs is to use a website called Stitch Fiddle. This has been one of my favorite graph applications. They have a free version, or you could pay a small monthly fee for more features. You can make it in different colors. Photo below was used with Stitch Fiddle.

Either way you choose, the possibilities are endless to make graphs. So, now all you need to do is get your yarn, tapestry needle, and start cross stitching away. If you are looking for a pattern to try this on, check out the Game Day Beanie which is featured in the photo above.
