Kaycee Cardi Crochet Pattern

The Kaycee Summer Cardigan Crochet Pattern will be your favorite summer cardigan top! It is made with light weight yarn. For example, I used Lion Brand Coboo (Cotton Bamboo Blend) Yarn.

The Kaycee Cardi Crochet Pattern is written for toddler through adult 3XL sizes. Most importantly, the pattern can be found FREE right here on crochetitcreations.com.

I chose Lion Brand Coboo Yarn for this summer cardigan pattern because it is light weight and very soft. I was looking for a yarn that wouldn’t be too hot during the summer months. One that you can wear as a swim suit cover up or for those cooler summer nights. The yarn also has amazing drape!

I highly recommend to use a light weight yarn for this pattern. And even more recommend to use a cotton if wanting to wear over the summer. This will help it remain a light top. I did make one in Lion Brand Mandala yarn. It did work out, however it was hot for my daughter. Acrylic yarn tends to be warmer than cotton.

The Summer Cardigan Pattern is worked in 5 rectangle panels that are sewn together to construct the sweater. I usually try to keep sewing at a minimum but it was a must for this pattern. That is because of it’s light airy stitches. But if you can make a blanket, you can make this summer cardigan! No increase or decrease stitches are used.

Kaycee Summer Cardigan Crochet Pattern by Crochet It Creations

Materials Needed

• 5.5mm Crochet Hook, or hook needed to obtain gauge
• Lion Brand Coboo Yarn (50% Cotton Bamboo, 232yd/212m, 3.5oz/100g) or use any light #3 that meets gauge
• Scissors
• Tapestry Needle
• Stitch Markers

Gauge

• 4” square = 8 rows and 4 shells (2DC, ch 2, 2DC) of the pattern. Obtain swatch by chaining 27 and following rows 1-4 of the pattern.

Stitches Used/Abbreviations (US Terms)

• Ch – Chain
• SC – Single Crochet
• DC – Double Crochet
• Join – Slip Stitch to 1st Stitch

Pattern Notes

• Lion Brand Coboo yarn is a light and soft yarn. For instance, it’s cotton/bamboo blend is perfect for summer clothing. Check yarnsub.com for a similar yarn or substitute for a yarn of your preference that meets gauge.
• Beginning ch 1 DOES NOT count as a SC, but beginning ch 3 DOES count as a DC.
• Beginning chain is multiple of 6 + 3, row repeat is 4 rows.
• Garment is made to be loose fitting and can fit a range of sizes. If you would like a longer fitting cardigan, simply add more rows to panels 1 & 2. Since row repeat is multiples of 4, I suggest adding rows in multiples of 4. 4 rows will add 2 inches.
• The pattern repeat instructions are written out and are used for all 3 panels. Use Table 2 to determine your beginning chain count and ending row count. However, if you need clarification on working the pattern with the table, see the end of pattern where an example is written out for the toddler size.
• The panels are sewn together using a technique called the Mattress Stitch. For example, see video HERE for how to construct the stitch pattern and sewing together.

Start crocheting pattern by using Table 2 and written pattern instructions to determine amount to chain and row to end on. Begin with Panel 1, the back body of the cardigan. Make two of Panel 2, the front body. Lastly, make two of Panel 3, the sleeves of the top.

Start Here – All Panels Pattern Stitch Repeat

Chain according to Table 2 amount for size and panel making. Note that beginning chain will be longer than the actual panel measurements as the width will become more narrow as working.

Row 1: SC in second ch from hook and SC in next ch, *ch 4, skip 4 chs, SC in next 2 chs;* repeat from * to * across. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as DC), (2DC, ch 2, 2DC) in each ch-4 space across, skip 1 stitch, DC in last stitch. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 5 (counts as DC + ch 2), *2SC in ch-2 space, ch 4;* repeat from * to * across, ch 2, DC in last stitch. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 4 (counts as DC + ch 1), 2DC in first ch-2 space, (2DC, ch 2, 2DC) in each ch-4 space across, 2DC in last ch-2 space, ch 1, DC in last stitch. Turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, SC in first stitch and ch-1 space. *ch 4, 2SC in ch-2 space;* repeat from * to * across, ch 4, SC in ch-1 space and SC in last stitch. Turn.

Repeat rows 2 – 5 until meets row requirements for size and panel making.

Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing together.

*Note that Panel 2 ends with row 4 of the repeat (DC row) so that it lines up with the SC row when sewing together.

When you are finished with all 5 pieces, move on to construction to sew the panels together.

Construction

Lay Panel 1 out flat. Line up both panel 2s to be facing at the shoulders. The last rows from panels 1 & 2 will be matching up at the shoulder. Note that you will have a SC row from panel 1 line up with a DC row from panel 2. As a result this will give the garment even flow on the rows and a unnoticeable seam.

Choose a right side to your work and make sure you have it facing up on all 3 panels so they match. Use your long tail and mattress stitch them together from the shoulder in to the neck.

*Note that when sewing Panel 1 to Panel 2 the 4 chains will line up with the 4 DC stitches and the 2 SC stitches will line up with the 2 chains.

Lay Panel 3s centered at the shoulders where you just sewed Panel 1 & 2 together, making sure the right side faces up to match. Mattress stitch panel 3 to the side in the middle of the shoulder to form the sleeve.

Fold garment in half at the shoulder seams. Sew Panel 3 closed at the bottom to make a sleeve, then continue to sew down the sides closing Panel 1 & 2.

Now you are ready for the border.

Summer Cardigan Border

Slip stitch to one of the sleeves (Panel 3), ch 1, SC evenly around. Join, then finish off. Repeat on other sleeve.

Slip stitch to neck. Ch 1, SC evenly around entire garment. Across bottom you may notice that the beginning chain stitches look uneven. Even this out by placing SC in each SC, then SC2TOG twice in chains of ch-4 space.
