The Ana Beanie is a cute, fun, textured Crochet Beanie Pattern. It comes in adult and child sizes. Complete the look with making your own faux fur Pom Poms for the top.
Since I have 2 little girls I wanted to write a pattern that included adult and child sizes, but also be trendy. I guess they could be Mommy and me hats…. š
Looking for a messy bun version? Check out The Gracie Messy Bun Beanie here which is a sister version of The Ana Beanie. There is even more patterns of these beautiful textured stitches. Check out the Ana Ear Warmer pattern and the Ana Infinity Scarf.
The Ana Beanie is a fitted hat. It begins at the brim and works up to the top using a size H crochet Hook, which is my favorite crochet hook for hats. It gives hats the perfect stretch and shape. If you would like the hat to not be so fitted, change to an I 5.5mm crochet hook after the brim. This will make the hat looser around the head. Check out my post here on how to make your own faux fur Pom Pom and how to attach it to your hat. Or if you prefer a yarn Pom Pom check out my post here with how to make one by hand, no tools required.
The Ana Beanie Crochet Pattern
Materials Needed
- size H 5.00mm crochet Hook, or size needed to obtain gauge
- Worsted weight #4 yarn…about 200 yds for adult size and 150 yds for child size
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Pom Pom – make fur faux ones HERE
Gauge
- 4″ square – 10 Rows x 13 HDC
Stitches Used (US Terms)
- SC – Single Crochet
- HDC – Half Double Crochet
- DC – Double Crochet
- FPDC – Front Post Double Crochet
- BPDC – Back Post Double Crochet
- SC2TOG – Single Crochet 2 Stitches Together
- HDC2TOG – Half Double Crochet 2 Stitches Together
- Join – Slip Stitch to Top of 1st Stitch
- CS – Camel Stitch – Crochet in the back side of the stitch, third loop. This pushes the normal top loops that you would crochet in to the front and creates a chain row in the front of the stitch. This is also called a knit stitch.
- BLO – Back Loop Only
- Ch – Chain
- St(s) – Stitch(es)
Pattern Notes
- Beginning chain DOES NOT count as a stitch.
- If you find it difficult to hdc in the back part/camel stitch in the single crochet stitches for row 1, replace it with half double crochet stitches.
- On the camel stitch rows, join to the top of the stitch, not in the third loop. Release your hook from the loop, insert hook in the backside of the st you just joined. Grab the loop and pull through bringing it to the backside of the stitch. Then ch 1 and begin your row. This cleans it up a little. See video HERE for reducing visibility of the camel stitch joins

I just posted he pattern on the blog. Itās crochetitcreations.com/the-Gracie-messy-Bun-Beanie/
Hi, Iām new to crochet, and I LOVE the look of this hat! I want to try it, but Iām really confused with the brim. Why do you only chain 8? That canāt be enough to fit around your head… this is probably very obvious to you pros but Iām stuck ?. Thanks!
The brim is made side ways. So the 58 rows will stretch across your head. I hope this helps!
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. This toque is so cute.
You are so welcome!!!

I love the small “handmade” tag. I’ve looked everywhere…where do you get them???
Hello! I bought them from wish.com. Iāve seen them on amazon though
Am I under the correct impression that when the brim of the hat is finished were not cutting off and starting the hat separately? its all one continuous stand of yarn?
Yes, you are correct!
Do you have any tutorial for this pattern please.
No I do not. Iāve thought about making one though!
What a beautiful hat!! If I what to do more than 58 rows for the brim, what would the stitch pattern be to configure the hat body? My head is 21″ and the 58 rows is only 19″. Kinda confused on how you get 84 SC’s when only 58 rows. Thanks for your help.
Hello! You want the brim to be about 17ā to give a tighter fit. I tried it out many times with a longer brim and it turns out too loose. You can do more rows if you like though. Then you just increase when you start on the hat portion. Add 2sc or extra sc wherever to get to 84 st. It should measure 10ā across when finished with the hat. I hope this helps and makes sense!
Is this suppose to be a slouchy beanie . Mine was?
No it isnāt. Was your gauge okay? Gauge and yarn can alter the pattern
So the pattern doesn’t state how many oz of WW yarn the hat requires…….
You are so right… I used impeccable yarn and about 200yd and 3oz for the child size. I donāt have the adult size without a Pom on hand
I’m confused on row 12. “hdc in third loop of 5 st”?? Is that 5th stitch? Then decrease hdc around?? I’m stuck for the moment. Please clarify. Beautiful hat, btw!!
Thank you! You are decreasing this row. So you will do 5 hdc in the third loop. Then decrease hdc in third loop. Repeat sequence. Does that help?
Yes, I think so….5 hdc then decrease hdc. Repeat around. All in third loop. Thank you!
Yep!!
Merry Christmas! I just sat down front of the fireplace and I’m so excited that I found this -going to give it a go with a written instructions but I would love also to have the PDF version if you wouldn’t mind thank you so much for your generosity I think everyone should not upload pictures of their creations!
Merry Christmas! The pdf version can be purchased from Etsy or Craftsy for a small fee. It comes with the Gracie Messy Bun version with child and adult sizes on both. Thank you!!!!
LOVE this hat! The look is amazing especially with the Faux Fur Pom Pom that is all the rage right now. I was wondering though how you recommend laundering this hat with the Faux Fur Pom Pom attached? Wash by hand in cold? On delicate? Thanks for an amazing pattern and for the new stitches. Im very happy how my first hat turned out ? Now if I can figure out how to make the Pom detachable all will be great ??
Thank you! Iām not sure if you can wash it with the fur. I havenāt tested it yet. My fur said dry clean only on it. I do have a post of how to make them and attach a button. You could just leave the top hole of the hat a little open so a button could go through. Or Iāve heard of people putting snaps on them.
I tried to go to Etsy and Ravelry. How can I get a PDF version of this pattern? Thank you!!!!!! I love it!
You are welcome!! Glad you like it!
It can be found here on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/listing/567874800/the-ana-beanie-crochet-patternhttps://www.etsy.com/listing/567874800/the-ana-beanie-crochet-pattern
And here on Craftsy https://www.craftsy.com/crocheting/patterns/the-ana-beanie/542382
Iām working on trying to get the PDF version available on Ravelry
Here is the link to the Ravelry PDF download, it also includes the messy bun version. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-ana-beanie
Do you have a gauge for this pattern? I need to match a gauge swatch in order to get the correct size. Thanks!
I did not do a gauge but included measurements. Iām new to writing patterns and I wasnāt really sure how to do the gauge since the rows were using different stitches. Try using the measurements or if you have an idea how I could include a gauge please let me know.
When joining in rows where you are working in the third loop, do you put the joining slip stitch into the top of the chain stitch or the 3rd loop of the 1st stitch from the previous row?
To help the joining look cleaner, I sl st to the top loops. Then remove my Hook and grab the loop from the back pulling through that stitch. That way your loop is in the back of the stitch and you can ch 1 and work in the third loop for the next row. Does that make sense? Iāll try to post a photo later.
My Ana hat is coming along and it looks fantastic! I just finished row 22 and I’m now stuck on how to close it at the top. Any suggestions?
Leave a tail after finishing off. Use a tapestry needle and sew in and out of the stitches. Pull tight to close. I usually turn it inside out and sew through the center several times.
Hi. I just finished your hat and wanted to let you know I posted a project sheet and picture on Ravelry, linking to your Project Gallery. It’s a wonderful pattern, fairly easy to crochet. I made myself the child’s size as my head is 19″ and it fits perfectly, a lovely change as even hats I make are usually either too big or too small. I used Loops & Threads Shabby in the palest of lavenders I’ve ever seen and it took about 1/2 a skein. (My Ravelry nick is Krikket207.) It will probably take me a day or two to put it up on my blog, and I’ll post a link to your website at the same time. Happy New Year and thanks again.
Awesome!! Canāt wait to see it! Thanks for the feedback!
Hi there!
I have the 58 rows for the brim but it’s not 17″.
Will that mess up the pattern if I make more rows to get to 17″? Or should I go up some hooks sizes to get the right length with 58 rows?
Thank you so much
Hello! What is the length of it? Using the BLO sc for the brim, it stretches so much. I prefer a tighter brim because of the stretch. I have a 21 1/2″ around head and am finding that I prefer the way it feels if I make the brim 16″ at the beginning.
So, it is completely up to you how long you want to make it. It will not change the pattern by using a different amount of rows because you will be increasing sc stitches to get the 84 for row 1.
I hope that helps!
-Jessica
Hello,
Iāve managed to make 2 of these beauties and I LOVE how they turned out! I want to make one for my 6 month old daughter. The child size would be too big. Is it possible to make it even smaller? I figure I could just make the brim smaller but it might be too long? TIA
Hello! You could but would have to alter it. I have a chart in my basic hat crochet pattern for hat measurements. For 6 months itās 15āWx6.25āH. You would definitely have to cut out rows also. Maybe do 2 camel Stitch rows and fp bp hdc instead of dc to shorten it some. Let me know if you need help I would love to see photos.
I finished it using your suggestions and it turned out great! Iād love to send you a picture. Is there an email I can send it to?
Awesome! I’m glad it worked out! You can send it to jessica@crochetitcreations.com or tag me on IG or FB š
Love this pattern! I’m just starting to make it….BUT….I agree with a few comments above….I get only 13 inches with the 58 sc band…..using a 5mm hook. I’m going to keep going, add a few more rows and see what happens š
Yes, definitely add more rows. I would go to about 16-17ā itāll stretch a lot so you donāt want t too long. It depends on the yarn and how tight you crochet
Hi Iām working on this awesome hat but I seem to be stuck in row 12. Am I skipping to the 5th st from the ch 1? Or am I just starting normal and all of it (the hdc and the dec hdc) all in the third loop? Iām still a little rusty when following patterns so I need some extra clarity. Oh and I saw you thought about making a tutorial which would be perfect for any future creators! Thank you so much though for this beautiful pattern!
Thanks for your comment! In row 12 you are doing the whole row in the third loop. You do hdc 5 times then decrease hdc. Repeat around. Does that make sense? I am hoping to get a video done soon. I have a full time job and 3 kids at home so have to figure out a quiet time to do so. Iāll post when I do.
This is such a big help!! Thank you!! I totally understand having a chaotic schedule. Thatās why I use crochet as my āstress reliefā!
Me too!!
What if I want to use more of a bulky yarn #5 which hook do you recommend using for this hat?
Which yarn is it? I have not used bulky yarn. I would think you would need to modify the stitches.
I love this hat!! Iāve done the adult one and planning on doing the child version. I was wondering approximately what age the child hat fits? Thanks for a fantastic pattern!!
Awesome! Great to hear the feedback. I would say child 6-10 maybe even 4-5 yrs would fit.
I actually kept this hat for myself, and I love it. I made it in a gray that’s just slightly darker than my hair so I really like the way it works. It’s a little big, but I have a small (19″ head) but it’s a little bigger than that. The next hat I’ll use a smaller hook — I used the recommended size on this one. It’s still a super hat, and I get all kinds of compliments. )
Great! Thank You! Any suggestions if I wanted to make this hat for a 6mth old?
Iāve had someone who made one and I think they used a smaller hook, did 2 rows of camel stitch, and hdc fp bp instead of dc.
Ho there. Thanks for the pattern! Iām loving it so far. I have completed one hat but the seam on mine is not so pretty. Can you clarify how to join each row?
Hi Michelle! I have a tip at the bottom of the pattern to help with the visibility of the seem.
I can’t do the camel stitch because for some reason my 3rd stitch is on the inside of my hat. How do i fix that??
Hello! Yes, the third loop will be facing the inside of the hat. That pushes the top loops of the stitch to the front.
I guess I don’t understand…once I connect the brim together do i flip it? Or just crochet around then flip it to go thru the 3rd loop?
Once you are finished connecting the brim you start working on the ends of the rows. The brim rows will be verticals and youāll be working horizontal. Once you join on each row, you will not be turning. Rachel you can send me an email with photos if that would be easier. Jessica@crochetitcreations.com
What I’m trying to ask is how am I supposed to crochet into the 3rd loop if it’s on the inside of my hat?
It sometimes helps to fold those top loops of the stitch forward to expose the third loop a little better.
I purchased the Ana Beanie on Ravelry, but it did not include instructions for the Gracie as well. I thought the PDF included instructions for both?
Please email me Katrina at jessica@crochetitcreations.com. Please include the email that you used to purchase the pattern and Iāll look for you. It does include both patterns. Also check your ravelry library
How about a matching scarf pattern? I’m in awe of anyone who can design a piece!
Good idea! Iāve got a bunch of designs going on but I can add that to the list āŗļø
You can find the Ana Infinity Scarf at
What color is the Blue beanie that is here? Just downloaded a PDF file of this hat to make for a niece’s birthday next month.?
Hello! It is loops and threads impeccable. I canāt remember the name of the color. I hope you enjoy the pattern! Thanks so much for your purchase
I started to crochet a year and a half ago. I totally love this pattern. I have 6 granddaughters that will love it as a Christmas present. Thanks.

For the life of me I cannot work the third loop stitch in the sc row! Any encouragement other than doing an hdc in the first row of what should be the hdc in the third loop!
That camel stitch on the sc can be tough. I use my fingers to pull up that back stitch. But yes you could always use hdc in the first round. Hang with it lady!
I have the same problem and had to go to the hdc
I am stuck, I don’t believe I did row 12 correctly. I fudged it so The amou t of stit he’s still came out right (72). Now in row 14, I’m confused still. Ch 1, then sc in 3rd loop of 4th stitch. Do I complete this stitch before beginning the SC Dec in next stitch? Then it says repeat around. What an I repeating *sc in 3rd loop of 4th st, SC Dec in next, repeat from * ?
Sc in 3rd loop of 4 stitches not 4th stitch.
I love this hat! But being a newer crocheter I need a video tutorial to make this. I hope you will think about it. Thanks so much !!
Hi Lisa! I have actually been working on a companion video. Tutorials are very time consuming. Hoping to release soon!
I love this pattern – turns out really nice!! I am needing to make a newborn / infant version of this and considered using a lighter weight (3) yarn and smaller hook to down-size it some. Do you think by doing that and using the child pattern I can get it small enough or would the child pattern just need to be modified? Thanks for sharing!!
It would probably work! I actually have a bonnet version coming out that is a adorable and will come in 5 child sizes. ?? I just shared a photo on Instagram and thereās on in my Facebook group
Hi, have a quick question… It says to repeat rows 1-5… Row 1 is single crochet around to get the initial 84 stitches… So I sc around for row 6? (I think it’s row 6)
It’s after the fpdc and bpdc
that’s what I did.
Am I the only one that had this hat turn out really, really big? And Iām usually a tight crocheter. I had to completely rework the pattern to make it work for an adult size.
Darn! May be yarn used or tension?
Thank you for the pattern. I love the entire collection. I am working on the beanie now and its so easy to remember the pattern after the first 5 rows. I have tight tension and i had to redo the band. I have decided to use 2 strands of yarn instead of one strand. It helps with my tension. I am using 2 different colors turquoise and cream Soft & Shiny by Loops & Threads using size 8/L hook. The band and the DC are turquoise the camel stitch are cream. Since i have alot of hair i will have to do 3 rows of camel and DC rows before I start decreasing. Im halfway finished and i love it. Again thank you for sharing your patterns.
Awesome! You are so welcome
Tips on closing without a pom pom? I’m using this pattern for a beanie for someone to wear under a motorcycle helmet and the pom pom will most definitely be a no no. How would you suggest closing the top to look nice and clean?
You can definitely close it as normal. The Pom Pom is added after itās closed. I have made several without the Pom and it still works up nicely
Iām working up this hat and just love it so far! I know you said you used loops and thread yarn, but Iām wondering in the photo of the childās version, it looks like an ombrĆ© yarn? Or is that three different colors? If so could you tell me which colors you used for that version? Itās really beautiful and Iām a total blue/turquoise fanatic. Thanks so much in advance!
Hello! Itās a Caron cakes yarn, but honestly isnāt one of my favorite yarns for hats. I Love This Yarn from hobby Lobby has many beautiful colors that work up nicely for hats
Thank you so much for getting back to me. Are you talking about the loops and threads yarn? Is that what you got at hobby lobby? Thanks again! I just finished the hat using Caron OmbrƩ and it almost has a fair isle look. Pretty cool! Where can I post a pic for you to see?
Wendy Loops and Threads is Michaels store brand, I Love this Yarn is Hobby Lobby’s store brand so she definitely used I Love This Yarn.
ohhhh!!! the name of the yarn is I Love This Yarn – duh! I thought she was just saying she loved the yarn lolol. Okay thanks for the clarification!

I have WW5, using a 5.5mm hook. Iām trying to make this hat for my husband. 58 rows for the brim is WAY too tight! I canāt even get the brim near his ears! Iām crocheting loose. To get the brim to Cover his ears (with stretch) I needed to do 72 rows. Now Iām not sure how many stitches to add for row 1! What do you suggest?
How was your gauge? Gauge and yarn can make a different.
I get to 17″ at 74 rows! I’m using Lion Brand Pound of Love, size H hook. I’ve made a couple of these and 58 rows for the brim doesn’t fit around my head either. I still do the same amount of stitches for rnd 1.
Have you worked up a gauge swatch first?

Hi! I love this hat and made several last year. I found that it stretched out quite a bit though over time (the brim especially). I used acrylic yarn. Any suggestions?
I like to use I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby for hats. And yes, the brim does stretch which is why I suggest for it be tighter.
Jessica, love your patterns. I would like patterns for the beanie, fingerless gloves, white cap w/ pompon. I can’t print the patterns as my printer died. Would you be able to mail copies to me? Willing to pay. Thank you.

Hello,
I love this hat and the pattern. I made one for my sister and it turned out great. I am now trying to make another one for my friend’s daughter who just turned 4. I want the brim to be 18inches instead of 19. Do I still use the same hook size and the same number os sc(72) in row 1?
You can use 68 sts around instead of 72 to eliminate 1″
I’m having gauge issues. I’m using I love this yarn, but it’s not a solid color. I’m wondering if the print is thinner than the solid? I’ve tried with a 5mm and 5.5mm and my gauge is just way too small. I’m worried that going up anymore in my hook size will leave holes. When I did the brim I used a 5mm hook and it took me around 83-84 rows to get to 17 in. The 5.5 wasn’t much better. What am I doing wrong?
how much was your gauge off?
I just made this beanie and it looks so beautiful. Does it have an Instagram #? I will tag it when I post it. I’m currently in quarantine but when I go outside, I look forward to getting a pretty picture!
Yes, the hashtag is #anabeanie or #theanabeanie Thanks!

I want to make the hat longer to be sure to cover my ears. Where would be best to add?
You can do another repeat of post and camel stitches.

How can I make this for my 6-9 month old? I made the child size but then realized itās for a much older child. Iām a beginner š
You can use a smaller hook size and it will come out smaller š
Thank you so much for this pattern!! I love making it and the finished product!!
