The Snow Beanie Crochet Pattern

Snow Beanie Crochet Pattern

Oh the weather outside is frightful but the fire is so delightful. And since we’ve go no place to go…let it snow…let it snow…let it snow. Its cold outside and I wanted to share this pattern of The Snow Beanie with everyone. It will sure keep you warm and cozy this winter.

I named it The Snow Beanie because it reminds me of playing out in the snow or snow skiing. With its large folded up brim and oversized Pom Pom on top it will sure keep you warm.

The Snow Beanie Crochet Pattern

It is constructed in length wise rows using the Camel Stitch….I know, I know. Another Crochet It Creations pattern using the Camel Stitch! This has obviously became my favorite stitch because of the knit-look of it.

The Snow Beanie is completed it with an over-sized pom pom on top, but I thought….this could definitely be a perfect hat for a man! It reminds me of sock hats! My husband even said he would wear one if I made him a solid color…ha!

If attaching a pom pom. See post here on how to make your own without any tools. Or make a faux fur pom pom with this post here. I used my large Clover USA Pom Pom Maker but you can use your hand or even your phone to make a Pom Pom.

Materials Needed

  • I 5.5mm crochet hook, or size that meets gauge
  • Medium weight #4 yarn, I Love This Yarn! By Hobby Lobby works perfectly. It’s 100% acrylic yarn, but any fiber that meets gauge will work.
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Optional: Measuring tape & Pom Pom Maker

Stitches Used/Abbreviations

Gauge

  • 4″ square = 10 rows x 16 CS (Make note that the CS tension can tighten as you work. If your gauge is loose, like 15 CS then it’ll likely tighten as you work. If it is tighter, around 17 CS then go up a hook size.)

Pattern Notes

  • Beginning chain DOES NOT count as a stitch.
  • Beanie is worked in flat rows in a vertical rectangle.

Row 1: FHDC to # listed in chart, turn. (Or chain to the amount of chart + 1, HDC in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across)

Row 2 –  until # listed in chart: Ch 1, CS in each st across, turn.

Do not finish off – Close the beanie by folding in half. Slip Stitch through the third loop of last row and the chain of the foundation row, all the way across to make a tube.

Turn hat right side out.

Close the top of the Beanie – Ch 1, SC2TOG into the end of each row around. Finish off leaving a long tail for closing the top of the hat

Attach a tapestry needle to the end of the long tail. Weave needle in and out of the end of the stitches pulling tightly to close the hole at the top. Push the needle through the top and knot a few times on the inside weaving in and out to secure.

Fold up the brim and leave like this. Or make your own yarn pom pom or faux fur pom pom to add to the top! Or leave the brim down and wear as a slouchy beanie.

I have been crocheting since I was a child. My huge love for crochet has opened this opportunity to teach others through this blog and online learning.

  1. You said if using the Scarfie yarn not to close the top with it or attach the pom pom with it, so what did you use for each?

    1. This was a lessened learned…the scarfie yarn ripped on me when closing the hat. I ended up finding a matching color of yarn and using that.

  2. Hi. I love your patterns but I am having a very hard time reading them as the TYPE is hard to see. I have MS and the TYPE (graphic ) runs to close and causes an aura,( blind spot ) . Are there any other way I can view the patterns? thank you, Jannette Butcher.

    1. Hello! Some browsers allow you to adjust the view in the settings. There are pdf versions to purchase most of my patterns on ravelry at ravelry.com/designers/crochet-It-Creations

      Thank you!

  3. Could I use worsted weight yarn to make this?

    1. You sure can. Scarfie yarn is a lighter bulky. Either match up gauge or measurements.

  4. Doris A Chamberlain

Well, I just wasted $3. I wanted pattern in worsted as well as chunky. Nothing like the ad. posted. Bah!

    1. Your purchase from Ravelry does include 2 PDF files, the chunky and worsted weight versions
