There are many crochet and other DIY ideas that use a pom pom. I typically add pom poms to my team/sports hats. My Santa Baby Hat also has a white pom pom hat on it. It is important to know how to make one properly so that it doesn’t fall apart.
You have the option of purchasing a pom pom maker like this one from Joann’s, or another craft store. You can make your own out of card board, there’s ideas on pinterest. Or you can make one by hand like I am going to show you.

worsted weight yarn is what I typically use, but you can use any other weight also

Yarn Pom Pom by Hand
First you will start cutting a piece of yarn about 20″ long. This will be what you secure the pom pom with and sew it to whatever you’re attaching it to.
To begin the pom you need to hold the yarn in your hand with your thumb securing the end. (I am right handed and I wrap it around my right hand)
You will need to wrap it loosely around your hand about 60-70 times. The more times you wrap it the tighter the pom will be.
You will need to cut the yarn on the same side as the beginning piece of yarn is about the same length.
You will then gently slide the yarn off of your hand over the middle of the 20″ strand of yarn. Tie the long strand of yarn around the center of the yarn ball. I usually loop it over twice so that the knot doesn’t come out. Then I turn the yarn ball over and tie it looped around twice again. I do this about 3-4 times, flipping it over.
Once you have the long strand of yarn tied securely around the yarn ball, you will begin cutting the “loops”. Once all of the loops are cut you will begin shaping the yarn into a ball.
It can be finished or you can attach it to a hat or whatever you prefer.
Attaching the Pom Pom to an item
You can now take those long strands of yarn and attach them to your item. You will need to sew it out a little from the center of the hat or item to make sure it is secure. I push the yarn needle through the center of the pom pom each time to make sure I am attaching it well. The last thing I want is a child or someone to pull it right off.
Or you can attach the pom pom to a button. I find that attaching it to a button can sometimes be the easiest way to sew it. You can then push the button through the top of the hat. Once I do that I usually take a strand of yarn the color of the hat and secure the button so it doesn’t remove.
There you have it! Your own Pom Pom made by hand without a maker!
