The Doggy Sweater Size XS Crochet Pattern

Keep your pet warm with this crochet dog sweater pattern. It is worked using basic crochet stitches. The Doggy Sweater size XS is for a dog approximately 5-10 lbs. Finished sweater measures approximately 12”L x 14”W. 

It is constructed from the bottom up in round rows using double crochet and front post/back post stitches. It can be worked up fairly quick using about 125 yards of worsted weight yarn.

Materials Needed

  • I 5.5mm Crochet Hook, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Medium weight #4 acrylic yarn 
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Optional: Stitch Markers

Gauge

  • 4″ x 4″ square – 10 rows x 14 HDC

Stitches Used

Pattern Notes

  • Be sure to check gauge before starting, different yarn or tension can alter the sizing.
  • Beginning chain DOES NOT count as a stitch.
  • Pattern is worked from the bottom up to the neck.
  • Optional to place a stitch marker on the last st of each round instead of joining for the body of the sweater. 
  • Measure around your pet’s chest to check the fit or which size to make. Give 1-2” for stretching.

Size Extra Small Crochet Dog Sweater

Row 1: FHDC 32, turn. (32)

Row 2-8: Ch 1, HDC in first st, *FPHDC in next st, BPHDC in next st;* repeat from * to * across until last st, HDC in last st, turn. (32) 

LOOSELY ch 18, be sure to not twist chain, Sl St to first st to form a circle.

Rnd 9-18: Ch 1, HDC in each st and ch around, join. (50) Finish off last rnd, unless ends in the center of the underside of the sweater. 

Constructing the leg holes – Find the center of the underside of the sweater and join with a Sl St. (See photo 1) 

Rnd 19: Ch 1, HDC in 3 sts, ch 9, sk 9 sts, HDC in 26 sts, ch 9, sk 9 sts, HDC in last 3 sts, join. (50)

Rnd 20: Ch 1, HDC in each st and ch around, join. (50)

Rnd 21: Ch 1, *HDC in 8 sts, HDC2TOG;* repeat from * to * around, join. (45)

Rnd 22: Ch 1, HDC around, join (45)

Rnd 23: Ch 1, *HDC in 7 sts, HDC2TOG;* repeat from * to * around, join. (40)

Rnd 24-26: Ch 1, HDC around, join. (40)

Rnd 27-30: Ch 1, *FPHDC in 1 st, BPHDC in next st;* repeat from * to * around, join. (40) Finish off.

Add a border to the bottom & leg holes

Sl St to the bottom right corner, ch 1, SC across the last row of post sts, SC down the side of the HDC rows (place 1 SC in the end of each row), SC across the chain row, SC back up the other side of the HDC rows, finish off.

Sl St to the corner of the leg hole, SC around, join. Repeat on the other side. Weave in ends.

  1. i need help on xs doggie sweater. row 8 add 8 ch, slip back to 1st hdc, hdc accross for row 9 including ch 8.
    does that mean there is a ch 8 on each end of row 8

    1. The post stitches were the back part. When you Chain 8 and connect. You will start working in a circle. The ch 8 is under the dogs tummy. So row 9 just works all the way around the circle.

    I think you have a type error on row 23-28… Think it should read 28 sts not 40

  3. I am working on Row 8. Add 8 loose chains and sl st to 1st hdc (when we sl st to 1st hdc are we joining to make a circle ??? And if so, how do we join the rest of the collar together ???

  4. When you say the chain 8 is for under the dog’s tummy, do you mean the chest ?? I am confused !!!

  8. When I make doggie coats out of worsted weight yarn, I soon have the coat covered with little doggie hairs. Is there anything that can be used to make the coat that will not attract the hairs? NO WOOL.
