Hello all! The Ana Beanie Crochet Pattern has been a popular pattern on crochetitcreations.com and Ravelry. It is a huge compliment when people love something I designed as much as I do! My blog has a spot that shows Crochet It Creations most popular blog posts and The Ana Beanie has been one of the top 3 every single day since it was posted in December 2017!!
I wanted to share with you a variation of the pattern. The Ana Beanie works from the bottom up. It creates the brim first then works the textured stitches. If I am adding a pom pom to the top of a hat, I prefer bottom up. I just like the look of it more and how it gathers. But there are times when you want to crochet a hat from the top down. And to be honest, the Top Down Ana Beanie is MUCH faster!
The Ana Beanie Crochet Pattern can be found on Ravelry here. The pattern also includes The Gracie Messy Bun Beanie. Which is the sister pattern to the Ana Beanie.
I hope you enjoy this top down version!!
Top Down Ana Beanie Crochet Pattern
Materials needed
- Size H 5mm Crochet Hook, or size needed to obtain gauge
- Worsted Weight #4 Yarn
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
- Stitch Marker
Gauge
- 4” square = 13 HDC x 10 rows
Stitches Used/Abbreviations (U.S. Terms)
- SC – Single Crochet
- HDC – Half Double Crochet
- FPHDC – Front Post Half Double Crochet
- BPHDC – Back Post Half Double Crochet
- Join – Slip Stitch to first stitch
- Ch – Chain
- St(s) – Stitch(es)
- CS – Camel Stitch – Crochet in the back side of the stitch, third loop. This pushes the normal top loops that you would crochet in to the front and creates a chain row in the front of the stitch. This is also called a knit stitch.
Pattern Notes
- Use stitch markers to mark the last stitch of each row. Move the stitch marker as you go.
- Beginning chain DOES NOT count as a stitch.
- Pattern is for adult size only and measures approximately 10” W x 8.5” H
- On the camel stitch rows, join to the top of the stitch, not in the third loop. Release your hook from the loop, insert hook in the backside of the st you just joined. Grab the loop and pull through bringing it to the backside of the stitch. Then ch 1 and begin your row. This cleans it up a little. See video HERE for reducing visibility of the camel stitch joins

I was wondering, if you remember what brand of yarn you actually used to make this beanie? Thankyou! I love the “top down” version!
It was hobby lobby’s I Love This Yarn! ☺️

Is there a way to make the top down version into a messy bun beanie?
You could try sc 30 around an elastic hair band then work the rest of the beanie
Thank you!
I did that and it turned out great!
Hello
I was doing well until row 14 with fphdc and bphdc in the first stitch. Can’t find video
